Editing and Production Specialist

Department: Communications
Location: Silver Spring, MD

Position Description

EnCompass LLC is seeking an Editing and Production Specialist to ensure EnCompass products and technical deliverables read clearly and adhere to the company’s style and quality standards. This includes support for all levels of editing, document formatting, and writing. The Editing and Production Specialist also helps coordinate requests for editing, formatting, and writing to ensure that EnCompass technical teams and other groups receive the services they need from the Communications Team.

This is a full-time position located at the EnCompass principal office in Silver Spring, Maryland, and follows the EnCompass flexible hybrid work model with split time between telework and the office.

This position is remote eligible. Candidates residing in the D.C. metro area will be given first consideration. Remote applicants might be considered, but only if candidate resides in a state where EnCompass is currently registered.

Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. for any employer without sponsorship for a work visa or permit.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

Essential functions:

  • Provides high-quality, audience-focused editorial services (copyediting, proofreading, substantive editing) and document production (formatting) support for external and internal products and technical deliverables (e.g., evaluation reports, studies, strategies, training material, work plans, new business proposals, blog posts, white papers, and news articles) in compliance with EnCompass’ and clients’ branding and marking standards
  • Collaborates with other Communications Team members to manage incoming requests, assess individual and team workload, and prioritize tasks
  • Helps design and deliver orientation sessions, refresher training, and other learning opportunities to raise EnCompass staff’s knowledge and skills related to editing, writing, and EnCompass’ style
  • Collaborates with other members of the Communications Team to create and update EnCompass templates for reports and other materials, and orient teams on how to effectively use them
  • Contributes to periodic reviews of the EnCompass Style Guide and related tools and resources to reflect current industry trends or organizational changes; and helps orient staff across the company on any updates
  • Contributes to team and corporate work plans, quality initiatives, and other activities that apply to the role of communications at EnCompass
  • May require occasional travel (e.g., for all-staff meetings)

Other:

  • Engage fully as a member of the EnCompass staff team, including participating in staff meetings and other EnCompass events, and providing administrative support to other team members as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

Qualifications

Academic Qualifications

  • Minimum of a High School diploma and 7 years; Associate’s degree and 5 years; Bachelor’s degree and 3 years; or a Master’s degree and 1 year experience in professional editing, writing, communications, or a related field

Experience and Skills

Required:

  • Must have a minimum of one year of copyediting experience
  • Superior writing and editing skills and command of English language grammar and syntax
  • Ability to restructure parts of language to achieve grammatical correctness, linguistic efficiency, uniformity, seamless readability, and appropriateness for intended audiences without disrupting the author’s style or intended meaning
  • Exceptional thoroughness, heightened attention to detail, and commitment to consistency
  • Demonstrated ability to apply the guidance in organization-specific and industry-standard style guides, especially the Chicago Manual of Style, and differentiate between American and British English to adhere to clients’ standards as needed, required
  • Experience and familiarity working with templates and formatting materials using Microsoft Office programs, especially Word and PowerPoint, and the Google Suite, especially Docs and Slides; ability to work with charts in Microsoft Excel, required
  • Flexibility, openness, and adaptability to change
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities/tasks and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with diverse teams at all levels of an organization; and aptitude for inclusivity and multiculturality
  • Ability to provide clear and constructive feedback, and receive feedback from colleagues
  • Strong work ethic, solution oriented, and committed to quality and excellence

Preferred:

  • Fluency in language(s) other than English preferred, particularly French, Spanish, and/or Arabic
  • Understanding of compliance with Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Familiarity with international development programs

The pay range for this role allows for the wide variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, certifications, and other business and organizational needs. At EnCompass, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $61,500 - $72,000
